OUR HOME IN MARLBOROUGH NEW HAMPSHIRE

VISIT THE LAB AND SEE WHAT WE DO BEHIND THE SCENES!

We have recently moved from our old location in Keene NH to a new location just a few minutes away in Marlborough.  In the lab, we store and maintain our collection of eggs, caterpillars, pupa, and adult butterflies and moths.  On any given day during our busiest summer months, we have thousands of individual caterpillars from over one hundred different species!  But our lab is packed with more than caterpillars.  We also store tools for caterpillar care, stockpiles of fresh food plants, and the technological and photographic equipment we use to observe and record our caterpillars’ behavior. Visiting the lab is a great way to see how education, science, film and photography are done!

OPEN HOURS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

NOW FREE AND OPEN YEAR ROUND!!!!!

We offer FREE public open hours (check in at the bottom of the front page for information on our open hours schedule as it becomes available).  Drop in often to see what’s happening in the Lab, as our livestock inventory and daily operations are always changing!  Here are a few examples of experiences you might have when you stop by for open hours:

  • Our professional education staff and volunteers can teach you about caterpillar biology and help you safely touch (and maybe even hold!) a caterpillar.

  • You’re welcome to ask us any caterpillar-related questions you have.  Our visitors often show us photographs of caterpillars, butterflies, and moths on their smart phones, asking us to identify species and provide more information about them.

  • You might get to help us care for our livestock and learn how to raise caterpillars, how to select their food, and how to keep their enclosures clean.

  • You may see us photographing caterpillars or making video recordings of their behavior, which gives you a chance to learn our “tricks of the trade.”

  • We might help you use technology and tools, such as digital microscopes and smart phone macro lenses, for in-depth and hands-on caterpillar exploration.

Your visit can last as long as you like, from a few minutes to an hour or more!

At present, funding support for our open hours is provided by visitor donations.  We ask you to give as generously as you can so we can continue to offer the free open hours experience!
