livestock season opens!

And the 2017 livestock season opens with a simple row of small vials. On this warm and foggy March 1st night I walked up the road and over melting snow to investigate red maple and blueberry buds with a UV flashlight. I found seven species of overwintering caterpillars just beginning to explore the swollen buds. I hope they don't get too bold - we are forecast to drop back into the single digits by the weekend. Stay tuned for some of the first new imagery of 2017!

The Caterpillar Lab fosters greater appreciation and care for the complexity and beauty of our local natural history through live caterpillar educational programs, research initiatives, and photography and film projects. We believe that an increased awareness of one’s local environment is the foundation on which healthy and responsible attitudes towards the broader natural systems of this world is built.
